Not to be served, but to serve

This week, during Mass, we were glad to have Deacon Denny with us, who gave the homily.  He spoke about both the Gospel reading and the saint that we remembered that day - Bl. Katherine Drexel.  In the Gospel reading of the day, Jesus told us that we should be like Him, who “came not to be served, but to serve.”

Blessed Katherine Drexel was someone who understood Jesus’ call to service very well. Born into a very wealthy family, Bl. Katherine ended up giving all of her money away to the poor.  With that money, she started many institutions like schools and shelters in order to help the poor, especially those who were also Native American or African-American.  She also started and led a religious order who dedicated their vocation and their lives to this holy mission.

But we are not all called to give away every penny we own or to join a religious order. The question arises, then - in what way are we called to serve?  Who, of God’s people, are we called to serve?  The only one who can answer those questions, of course, is God Himself.  We just need to ask Him.

The best way to ask Jesus things is to pray. There are many ways to pray, of course.  There are specific texts, like the Our Father.  There is free conversation, like the way we talk to each other.  And, during Lent, we are reminded of other ways to pray.  For instance, if you have promised to give something up during Lent, like chocolate or candy, every time we feel yourself wanting it and being frustrated or disappointed that you can’t, you can offer up those feelings to God. In making that sacrifice, and dedicating that sacrifice to Him, you can be reminded, perhaps, of those who are less fortunate than yourself.  And that can be a type of prayer, too.

We can know that God hears our every prayer and will answer them.  We can rest easy, trusting that God will guide us to fulfill His loving plan for us - if we just allow Him to take care of us!

National Reading Month
March has been designated as National Reading Month. We are excited to join with many other schools in the nation who are recognizing that essential skill that we celebrate and encourage - reading. To that end, we have planned several fun activities, in addition to the Happy Joe’s Reading Incentive, where students earn a free Little Joe’s pizza for completing their reading goals for the month. The activities are as follows:

  • Friday, March 5 - Reading Swap - Older students and younger students have an opportunity to share stories with each other
  • Thursday, March 11 - Read the Morning Away - students curl up with some favorite books throughout the morning
  • Thursday, March 18 - Dress Up Day - students can dress up as their favorite character from their favorite story book
  • Thursday, March 25 - Book Share - students can bring a book to school that we will donate to a charity, giving other children a chance to enjoy a good story

Thank you very much for helping us celebrate your child’s developing reading skills.  If you have any questions, please give the school a call!

Spelling Bee Winners
The Cathedral School held its own, independent and local spelling bee for 5
th
and 6th graders on Wednesday, March 3, 2010.  The format is nearly identical to the national competition, but organized on a local level.

Earlier in the week, all 5th and 6th grade students at the Cathedral took a written spelling test, as a first round of competition.  On Wednesday, the twelve finalists, six from each grade level, competed in an oral round. The students had worked hard with their words and had done well.  In the end, three students remained.  Haley Roed, 6th Grade, won 3rd place.  Fifth grader Charles Eickhof earned 2nd place.  And the Cathedral School Spelling Bee Champion of 2010 was fifth grader Morgan Kresl. The three finalists won a Little Joe pizza, a medium pizza, and a large pizza, respectively, courtesy of the generous sponsorship and support of Happy Joe’s Pizza.  Congratulations!

Mardi Gras Wrap-up Meeting
We will have our annual Mardi Gras Wrap-up Meeting on Wednesday, March 10 at 4:45 p.m. in the school’s library.  We will be done in time for the 5:45 p.m. Mass.  Please come and share your ideas to take the successes of this year’s Mardi Gras and make them even better next year.  See you there!

Quarters for Haiti
We will be doing something new this year, during Lent. With the recent devastation that the citizens of Haiti have experienced, the school staff has decided to dedicate our Lenten almsgiving to the people of Haiti.  So, on every Friday in Lent, during our morning prayer time, we will collect “Quarters for Haiti.” This can actually include any type of coin, cash, or check, as you wish. We will be measuring the totals each week, so the students can see how we are doing, in our efforts to help the people of Haiti. Thank you, in advance, for your assistance with this Lenten almsgiving project!

Volunteers Needed for MOYC!
In April, Crookston will celebrate the Month of the Young Child (MOYC).  We are planning on having a booth at the main event on Tuesday, April 20. To prepare for this booth, we need a few volunteers who are willing to develop a fun activity for the children who will be moving throughout the exhibits.  Please call the school if you’re interested, or if you have any ideas to share.  Thank you for your help!

PACE Meeting
We have a PACE meeting coming up on Wednesday, March 10 at 7:00 p.m. in the school’s library.  Please come and join us to talk about ways to help out our children and add to their wonderful education here at the Cathedral School.  Remember, the class that has the highest percentage of parents in attendance that night will win an extra 15 minutes of recess. Hope to see you there!
